Always Learning

When I was young they said "You can't teach and old dog new tricks."  But that doesn't mean that an old photo dog like myself shouldn't at least try.  Tonight I was in Salt Lake City, Utah where the famous Mormon Temple is.  I looked up through some trees and saw what I thought was an interesting and very pretty view of the spires, but I had always wanted to try that zoom technique where you zoom during the exposure, so I thought I'd try it on these.  It's not perfect, but it was fun trying.  I'm going to keep trying.  If any of you know where there is a good tutorial on this technique please let me know.

Nice try! I like the effect here.
I've found that the key to getting quality shots using the zoom during the exposure is really just experimentation. Among my photos is one where I zoomed in on a jack o'lantern. I Began with the photo framed just as I wanted it to be then, after a quick pause to sort of set the background image, I began to zoom but not to fast. Ultimately I tried to end my zoom at the moment the shutter closed. I played around quite a bit with different speeds in my zooming and with exposure compensation and ISO before I came up with just the right shot. Good luck! And, by the way, thank you for all the comments you made on MY blog photos. Much appreciated!

I agree with Tim - lots of experimentation. I did a photo shoot last fall using this technique with a wide variety of subjects - got some amazing results. I also used a tripod for some of the shots - gives a whole different effect. And lots of phun!
