Ahh, Spring at Yellowstone

We had two beautiful days in Yellowstone National Park where the weather was quite nice and cooperative with some beautiful clouds to enhance the images.  Then yesterday afternoon, as promised by the weatherman, things started to change pretty fast.  Some places we had steady winds in the 50 to 60 mile an hour range and other places we had sudden gusts that made you wonder if they were going to pick up your camera, tripod and all, and send them sailing.  One such gust blew my hat right off my head and sent it down the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.  It was one of my very favorite caps too :.-( .  Yellowstone is in a prime location as well as altitude for rather startling weather changes.  The photo you see above was taken this morning in a near blinding snow storm not too long before we headed home.

This is the exact same bison on Monday afternoon, not far from where the top one was taken.  Okay, I don't know if it is really the same one ;^) .  But there is at least one in about 1000 chance that it is.

I'm pretty excited about some of the photos I was able to capture in and around Yellowstone.  I'll be sharing them here.  I hope you enjoy seeing them almost as much as I enjoyed finding them.

Don't be shy - leave a comment or email me.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Scott,I think I was about as cold as this buffalo today. It was definitely white knuckle driving. It's time to start planning our next trip.

Amazing creatures, bison. You got a very good shot of this one - love the snow on his face. Sorry about your cap, though.

Great shots Scott - especially like the top one (yesterday I could have used a coat like the one he's got on!).

btw - I used to live directly north of there (Calgary, AB) where this sort of spring weather is 'normal' - now I'm in Ontario where it's anything but at this time of year. Oh well, all the white stuff's gone today :)

Look forward to all your YS shots.

Man this can't be true. Still be able to see a buffalo that close (okay you might have used the telelens). Wonderful. And cold.
Even in spring??? Or was it an old shot from christmas. Ha.

Sorry to hear about your cap. I'll send you a new one if you mail me the adress Scott. I'll pick out a wonderful bright orange one from our queensday if you'd interested ;-))))

At least you'd been seen by Chad as Scott and not a wooley mammoth.
Kee see you around. Hugs Dagmar

Hi Scott, I don't know what I like best: to visit your blog everyday or to come after a break to have many photos to admire, that's what I'm doing today, what a treat. Sorry about your cap. Great photos of the bison, I'm looking forward to all the others from YS.

Really good to hear from each of you. All that fuss over one little cap is kind of funny. Being bald I have probably 20 caps, but I liked that one because it was wool and had a suede leather brim. Oh well. To answer Dagmar's question I would guess I was about 30 feet or 10 meters from that bison when I took the photo. I was using a lens that would be equivalent to about 85 mm if it were on a 35 mm film camera.

Isn't it ironic that sometimes the worst weather makes for dramatic and memorable photo ops. Love the buffalo decorated with snow. Looking forward to more of your images. P.S. Maybe someone at the bottom of the canyon found a great hat to keep his head warm!

Great shots! The first one brought back memories of that old Redford movie, "Jeremiah Johnson."

I think sometimes adverse conditions can create some wonderful opportunities. The snow dusted buffalo is perfect example. It is a great shot. You must have been pretty close to be able to get such a close up shot with the 85mm.

The buffalo photos are astounding Scott, I thought I was looking at paintings... I hope that you find this as a compliment because that's how it is meant... a compliment in high regards.

I was browsing through a lot of your photos here tonight and now I have 3 top photographers here; Rick, Chad and yourself. Great photos guys! I have literally had my breath taken away for that second in time viewing some of the shots the three of you take. Scott I'm just wondering why your photos aren't coming up on my dashboard, hmmm investigation time I suppose.

Have a happy Sunday!
