This may surprise some of you, but I'm not a big fan of most of these photos of huge expansive views. Why? Because it's usually hard to find a Point of Interest (POI), making it very easy for the eye to wander off the photo which means the the photo does not really hold your interest. Today's photograph is of huge cliffs in a section of Zion's National Park called Kolob Canyon. Interestingly you cannot drive to this part of Zion's without leaving the park and going in through another entrance just barely off the Interstate Highway. If I don't really like huge landscapes like this why did I post it? There are several reasons I like this one; first, it was taken fairly early in the day and so the sunlight is pretty dramatic giving you nice shadows and color. Speaking of color I think that is another nice thing about this photo is the deep reds of the rocks. Another thing I like is the very interesting texture on the cliff side to the far right, which looks like someone took a fork or something like that and scratched away the surface, as opposed to the main mountain side in the center which is much smoother. I was also very careful to place myself where I had tree branches on the top and side which creates a frame that helps keep the eye in the photo, enjoying the things I pointed out before.. It's very hard to capture this huge magnificence in all it's grandeur, but I gave it a shot, and I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I enjoyed taking it.
Don't be shy - leave a comment or email me. I look forward to hearing from you!

I love the rich color and the deep lines of texture in the red rock. I also like the tree branches in the foreground! I think it's lovely!
Magnificent comes immediately to my mind! The colors are so rich.
Such a beautiful area- intense color.
It's marvelous Scott and thank you for giving us a little background in that you've explained this photo very well. Have a great weekend.
Scott your photos here are stunning! This one here is amazing and the way you've added the border give it a 3D effect in a way. How do you do that border, is it a photoshop thing? As you might have guessed I don't have a clue how to use photoshop just yet, I'm learning how to use my cameras first!
Cheers, happy shooting!
Overall, I really enjoy this shot. I understand what you were going for with the branches on top and on the side, and I think you accomplished your goal. However; I'm not sure if I think it enhances or distracts from the shot, as far as my personal enjoyment goes. That said, I stared at the image for a while debating the issue in my mind; so clearly it was effective in keeping my eyes in the shot! :o)
