PhotoHunt: Memorial

Lens: 14-42mm, Focal Length: 42 mm, f stop 5.6, 1/80 sec., ISO 100
Enhanced and converted to B&W in Bridge. Added grain filter in Photoshop.

The PhotoHunt theme for this week, I suppose in honor of Memorial Day Weekend in the United States.

A few days ago I posted a photo of a little gas station/motel in Echo Utah here. Just a few hundred feet away is the tiny cemetery for the town.  This gravestone caught my eye because in front of it was a wicker basket that had obviously not had any flowers put in it for many a year, but was still half full of very dry caked dirt.  It was the grave site of a child who had died. I wish you all very happy thoughts of your loved ones who have passed on as we celebrate Memorial Day.

Don't be shy - leave a comment or email me.  I look forward to hearing from you!

May be the mum moved away. My son too lied in a grave unvisited for 16 years when I went abroad.

That's a very nice memorial. It's always so sad to see the gravesite of a child.

You are very clever with your effects. That grain filter surely works!

Interesting effect, though a little too much for me. I would love to see the original of this in standard b&w.

Still nice.

Kind of puts me in mind of a rock cairn.

I love the old cemeteries. They are a little sad since they are often not well maintained but they do make for nice photos.

Nice shot for the theme. I love the basket next to the headstone.

the added effect somehow makes the grave look more sad. Nice capture and treatment of the photo. have a nice weekend!

What a touching photo, Scott. No words necessary, only remembrance and respect for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our benefit.

I really like what you did with the photo. Makes it even more poignant with the empty basket.

Thanks for visiting mine and hope you're having a nice Memorial Day weekend.

(a bit late with comments - internet problems; arggghhh!)

I like what you did with it; supports the 'memorial' theme well; reminds me of a photo from an old newspaper clipping from long ago!

I can see why it would attract your attention. It's sort of melancholy and you've really captured that in the way you have edited the picture.

Very moving. I like the way you handled the subject.

What a great shot! The effect you applied adds to the surreal nature and makes the photo even more effective. I really like this one!
