Many of my posts are coming from my flickr page. To see them enlarged with a black background just click on the photo and then when the flickr page with the photo appears click on the photo again. I hope you enjoy.

Phun Phriday! # 22 - Tell Me About It

This is going to be a little (okay a lot) different angle on Phun Phriday! since I'm not going very far out of the box. However, this Phun Phriday! you get to have the Phun. All of us have different monitors that we view the images on and I know some of you out there undoubtedly have very high end ones. Mine is more of a medium level one and at work I check the blog on a low end "business quality" monitor.  I know the photos look different on different monitors.  I'd like to know more about what you see.

Images # 1 and # 2 are identical (The frame and the water mark may be very slightly different) except I saved them at different JPEG quality levels. I'd appreciate it if you would look at the quality of the image and tell me how much different you can see on your monitor with "0" meaning I don't see any difference and "10" meaning I don't believe they are the same photo. Of course I need to know which one is the better of the two. I Do suggest you click on each one to enlarge it to see it at full viewing size.

# 1

# 2

Images # 3 and # 4 are also identical and I'd like you to tell me the same things on them, comparing them against each other not against # 1 and/or # 2.
# 3

# 4

And finally, and this is purely subjective, which do you like better between the black background and the natural background?

I will tell you the JPEG settings and the voting results on Sunday, with my Sunset Sunday post.

Have you done something outside of the box recently? We'd love to see it. Just leave a link to it in your comment. If not, I hope you'll feel free to comment anyway.

Don't be shy - leave a comment or email me.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Probably a 5. The top photo in each set is much deeper in color. The bottom photo is a bit "hazy" looking.

I like the light background, the black is a little distracting/hard on my eyes. But as I rule I tend to avoid black backgrounds. I'm just weird that way.

Scott I have viewed these on both of my monitors, one is a Toshiba laptop the other is my LG 21" monitor , I've enlarged all four of the photos and there is very little differences which I can pull out on this end. The only noticeable one is the leaves under the main lily in #2 are a wee bit blurrier than the ones in #1. It seems that the dof is the same with the lighter background in #3 and #4.

I prefer the black background with the deep orange, the orange is more brilliant with the background.

Beautiful photo of the lilies, especially with the black background! Have an awesome weekend, I'll most likely be posting on Sunday's sunset but I still haven't figured out how to link, my life's to darn busy even with all this time off! lol

I copied each set into Photoshop Elements where I can easily display and compare photographs. I noticed that all four photographs are of the same dimensions, with A and C having a higher resolution. I don't notice any difference between the A-B or C-D combination. I wouldn't expect to see a difference because an image view is limited by a computer's resolution. However, if you printed these pictures, I would expect A and C to be a better print (providing there are enough pixels to create a decent print, given the dimensions of the images!).

I prefer the lighter background because the lilies are already dark. The black background seems to make them darker still. The lighter background seems to lighten up the lilies a little bit. At least that's how I see it :-)

I would say a difference of 5. The reason for 5 is because although the differences were not great, as soon as I realized they were identical I said outloud, Wow! There is a clear difference. Number 1 is much richer in color. Noticeably so. I like it over 2. 3 is much richer than 4. I like it over 4. - I like the black background. I think it makes them stand out better and makes the color seem even richer. ~ This was phun!

Wow, after reading the comments so far, I think you are really going to be confused. I have a really big monitor, high end Mac and on my monitor there is not a huge difference between the photos. It would have been nice to compare the large version side by side for a more accurate response. That being said, on my monitor both of the second photos in the series seem a tad more vibrant, more darker contrasts and a bit sharper. That being said, without viewing them side by side, the difference is negligible. Whenever I send people to my website to look at 'proofs' I always caution them to not pay to much attention to the exposure and color. I have found over the years that people's monitors vary to extremes. I use the same calibrating devise that my lab uses and I calibrate my monitor to the same specifications that the lab uses. So I'm pretty confident prints turn out fairly accurate. The one problem is the difference between looking at an image on a LCD monitor compared to looking at it on a piece of photo paper. Often when I print stuff out, they appear less vibrant than they are on the screen. Moving on, both backgrounds are lovely, it's a matter of personal preference for the difference in mood and feel each one creates. The black is obviously more dramatic.

My comments are more in line with Karen's. #2 and # 4 are sharper on my monitor. And though I really like the black background - I love the lighter one. Clear as mud??

I hope you're going to enlighten us when this is done because now I'm dying to know. I cannot tell a difference between them. My monitor is not calibrated, though that is something I would like to do because as a friend at a lab put it, "You're just pissing in the wind if your monitor is not calibrated." You have say that with an English accent as he did and then it doesn't sound so harsh. Anyway, I prefer the black background, but I agree that's just a matter of personal preference. The colors are lovely and vibrant in all.

I also have a Mac with a large monitor. The second image in each case (2 & 4) is sharper and more defined, with more detail. I compared them side by side and enlarged. The difference is noticeable whether enlarged or not. In particular, 2 & 4 are more contrasty and the dark areas are quite a lot darker. 1 & 3 have brighter highlights. The background in 4 has more definition. In 3 the wallpaper and furthest flower are a bit more blurry.

As to the background, I slightly prefer the black one, as it brings the rich orange colour out better.

Having said all that, any of the images look just fine when not compared to the others, so in that regard I wouldn't say any one was better than another.

Scott I do see very big differances. in a scale of 8 when it come to light in them. I for one love the black back ground.
Hope I've helped you out here.
Oh and this was from my laptop who has great screen views.
