Where in the World?

(f5.0, 1/60, 25mm, ISO 160)

Back from another short trip. This photo was actually taken this morning before we packed up to return home. It was taken at a site in central Idaho called Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (About the size of the state of Rhode Island).  When President Calvin Coolidge signed the proclamation declaring it a National Monument one of the words he used to describe it was "weird".  Craters of the Moon is not the most photogenic place I have ever visited, though there are some beautiful photos to be had, but it was certainly an interesting visit with amazing Geologic significance and education.  Actual Astronaut training was also conducted at Craters of the Moon in the early days.  I'll be passing on more photos from Craters of the Moon in future posts.

Don't be shy - leave a comment or email me.  I look forward to hearing from you!

All that black rock (?) reminds me of the lava rock all over the island of Hawaii.

I think you captured a beautiful sight. I also think weird can be very photogenic! I love the contrasts here and the touches of yellow/orange throughout the dark foreground.

I agree with all the others, this is a great photo with great light. I went to Craters of the Moon 10 or 12 years ago, on the way to Yellowstone, an awesome place indeed. I herd they closed the caves off. That true? If so, too bad. Extremely interesting to see the inside of a lava tube!

This looks like something straight out of a sci fi movie Scott, odd but in it's own weird way it's interesting. Another masterfully captured photo Scott. Have an awesome day!

Just wondering how close park visitors can get to Craters of the Moon. It is certainly an awesome place, Scott.
