Closing the Series

Enough is enough.  Yes I still have a few ice photos that I think are acceptable that I haven't posted, but I do think I've posted the very best ones.  I believe this will be the last for this year.  It sure was a great find for me though and I'm glad I got them.

Tomorrow starts a new month, and I'm going to throw a bit of a curve for the month of March.  See you tomorrow.

Sunset Sunday - 54

Do you have a beautiful sunset/sunrise to share? We'd love to see it. Post a link  in your comment, (click here to learn how) or just tell us it's there and we'll click on your name to find it.

OBTW, if you do post something for Sunset Sunday it would put a big smile on my face if you added a link to my blog. Thanks!

Phun Phriday! # 55 - More Phun with Snow

I guess technically it was Phun Monday, which was Presidents' Day in the USA.  I took those grandkids that could go sledding. It was terrific Phun. Though I captured dozens and dozens of photos I picked this one to share with my blogland friends because of the intense expression, hat, and the fact that he was trying to snowboard on a sled. Just between you and me, he made it about two more feet before he was down but we all had great PHUN! We also had hot cocoa and donuts.

Ohhh - happy times with the grandkids, drinking hot cocoa and eating donuts . . . It just doesn't get any better than that.

As you know by now photography should be Phun and that's why I have my Phun Phriday! posts. Have you done something Phun, weird and/or creative lately? If so, leave a link to it in your comment or just tell us it's there so we can go find it. If not, I'd really love to hear from you anyway.

Yellowstone Revisited Again

When Chad commented on yesterday's post he suggested I look at it in B&W so I did.

Your thoughts?

Sunset Sunday - 53

Happy Sunset Sunday to you.  I suspect this is the last of the Ice photos.  As I mentioned before, the forces of nature that caused these various ice formations were just totally captivating and fascinating to me.  Most of the ice formation photos I've posted have been from the East side of a causeway that takes you out to Antelope Island.  At the exact same time on the West side were many of these piles.  They looked like a large truck with a snow shovel on the front had pushed the ice up into piles 3 or 4 feet deep.  But, in fact it was all done by the water and wind and expansion and contraction of the ice forming.  As I said, AMAZING.

Do you have a beautiful sunset/sunrise to share? We'd love to see it. Post a link  in your comment, (click here to learn how) or just tell us it's there and we'll click on your name to find it.

Phun Phriday! # 54 - In the Wind

Welcome to another edition of Phun Phriday!  Over the past year and a half or so I have been trying to capture a descent photo of a flying bird.  The most available ones around here are Seagulls, which happen to be the Utah State Bird and I have really struggled to even get an acceptable one of them.

Wednesday was the last of an unseasonable warm spell and a cold front was moving in to our area being led by very strong winds.  I went out to a bird refuge about 20 miles from my house to try to get some shots of migrating bald Eagles, which have been spotted in the area.  All I saw were hundreds of Seagulls.

The interesting thing is that the average forward air speed of these Seagulls was approximately 0 miles per hour or less.  All they were doing was flying into the wind, so it meant that mostly they were bobbing up and down, left and right and even backwards

To get these shots I was using my longest lens and sitting in my car with the window down, because when I got out I was constantly fighting the winds - just like the birds.  I took over 200 shots and deleted about 150 of them.

Below is the one that got away!  Look closely and you may see tears on your screen.  My tears.

The bald Eagle that I really went out for finally appeared, but by the time I noticed him I did not have time to refocus before he was starting to leave, so as I tried to focus I fired off 4 burst shots, and this, the very first one, was the closest to acceptable.  Imagine how beautiful this would have been, had it been in focus.  I shared this with you because it is my very first photograph of a bald Eagle in flight in the wild.  I don't think it will be my last because now I am on a quest.

As you know by now photography should be Phun and that's why I have my Phun Phriday! posts. Have you done something Phun, weird and/or creative lately?  If so, leave a link to it in your comment or just tell us it's there so we can go find it.  If not, I'd really love to hear from you anyway.

It's February Again

If you saw yesterday's photo of the fresh footprints in the soft sand you may have read that that was taken on Tuesday evening and those footprints were made on Tuesday afternoon, when the temperature was probably almost 60° F (15° C). That's not typical February in Northern Utah. Last night my truck was parked outside for about 2 1/2 hours while I was at my daughters place and when I went out to come home there was almost 3" of new snow on it.

The photo for today's post was taken about 2 weeks ago. If you're looking for scale, the flat slabs of ice making up either side of the "Tee Pee" are about 1 1/2 inches thick and the center of the "Tee Pee" is about 12 to 14 inches high.

Clear and Warmer

All of those ice photos we have been enjoying lately were taken less than two weeks ago on a beach not far from the one where I found these yesterday evening.  No, I did not make them.  But it is still February in northern Utah and Thursday we are expecting snow showers and a high temp in the mid 30's F (single digits C) with more snow possible this weekend also.

Happy Valentines Day

I'm about as romantic as a cold lump on the ground. But today is Valentine's Day and I found something with some pinks and curly stuff in it. And I'll bet if you look hard enough you might see something close to heart shaped.

Have a happy one!

Sunset Sunday - 52

Very ironic actually. . . Sunset Sunday # 52 - so celebrating one year of Sunset Sundays - and I'm not even posting a sunset shot.  This is a sunrise, but if I hadn't told you that you would never have known.   I'm probably down to only about 3 or 4 more of these ice formation shots.  So there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Do you have a beautiful sunset/sunrise to share? We'd love to see it. Post a link  in your comment, (click here to learn how) or just tell us it's there and we'll click on your name to find it.

Phun Phriday! # 53 - Phun with Ice

Really this whole week has been "Phun with Ice", but since today is Phun Prhiday! I put in one of the Phunnest ones today.  I personally cannot fathom the forces of nature that create an Ice formation like this, especially when you consider that it all had to happen relatively quickly since 60 hours before I took this photo this was all liquid water.  Cold, yes, but still liquid.

Speaking of Phun, while I was down in the prone position taking some other ice formations, unbeknown to me, Chad was taking some shots too and here is one of Chad's better shots from that evening.

As you know by now photography should be Phun and that's why I have my Phun Phriday! posts. Have you done something Phun, weird and/or creative lately?  If so, leave a link to it in your comment or just tell us it's there so we can go find it.  If not, I'd really love to hear from you anyway.

You said to keep 'em coming.  This looks even better when embiggened.

For those who guessed on yesterday. . . Well I didn't measure exactly, but about 12 inches.

Just the Icing on the Lake

I hope you'll let me know when you're tired of these Ice shots, because I still have a few of what I think are the best ones.

I know it's not Phun Phriday, but just for Phun tell me how tall you think that tallest ice piece near the center is.

Cool - No Really Cool

The setting sun illuminates the mountains in the distance.

Today's trivia.  As you know water freezes at 32° F or 0° C.  Sea water is saltier, thus denser and so it freezes at approx 28.4° F or -2° C.  The Great Salt Lake is quite a bit saltier than the ocean so it would have to be even colder.  Just in case you ever need this info when impressing friends at a party or if you're asked on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?".

Below is the same ice formation as at the top, but I photographed it from above so you could see the shape  from that angle.  Try clicking to embiggen and see if you like it even better.

On the Upsweep

I am absolutely, head over heels captivated by these ice formations.  I'm no geologist but I see a lot of how some of the mountains, hills, etc. may have been originally formed as the crust of the earth moved around.  Of course the rock doesn't melt again and so some of it is washed away by wind and water, and large pieces fall off and dirt blows in to fill in underneath.  Ice, of course, is just temporary.  I'm not certain, but my guess is that we get more and better ice formations on the Great Salt Lake because the high salt content means the water must get even colder to freeze and so it also melts sooner, then moves because of wind and the water moving under the ice and then refreezing very quickly when it hits the right temperature.  Those are just my theories - I'd love to hear yours, especially if you really know.

This shot is much more for interest in the movement and action of these formations than for it's artistry.  I have some coming up in the next few days that I am more excited about artistically.

Phun Phriday! # 52 - One Year

I may not be smarter than a 5th Grader, but I do know that there are 52 weeks in a year, and that means 52 Phun Phriday!s and if this is # 52 that means I've been doing this for one year . . .So, Happy First Anniversary to Phun Phriday! I can't wait until the Golden Anniversary. I'll be . . . well - let's say well over 100 years old.

Today's Phun Phriday! Photo isn't anything too far out of the box, but I thought it would be Phun to share, and if you want to try to guess what it is I'd love to read your thoughts. So let's have some Phun with this one and I'll let you know what it is within the next couple days.

Welcome to February 2011

Have you ever done this. . . go to a blog that you visit real regularly and notice a new header and say to yourself, is that new or am I just now noticing it????  I probably shouldn't admit it, but I have done it many times and then even if I love the image I don't say anything in my comment because I'm afraid I'll be thought a fool for saying something about a header that's been there for two weeks.  Goes back to the old adage that "It's better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt".

For the past several months, I've tried to start each month with a new header.  I say bravo to those like Sandra who put up new header photos often, or sometimes even daily.  Every month I'll get a comment in the second or third week that says something about my "new" header photo.  It's usually someone who visits regularly too.  It always makes me happy because then I know that I'm not the only one that sometimes doesn't notice.

Today is February First, so I've put up a new header photo, and this month I actually added the February 2011 in the corner.  I'm trying to make my headers more appropriate to the month I'm posting them, and so for February in Utah you get a cold, wintry image. The header was made by cropping down the photo you see above.  I like the one in the header much better since I cropped out a lot of unnecessary foreground and background which brings your attention to what I think is the interesting part.

I hope February 2011 is the best month of your life - so far.
