Phun Phriday # 65 - Seagull Rock

You're probably thinking, "we saw seagulls yesterday, what's with this more seagulls?"  Well it is Phun Phriday! and on Wednesday evening when I went out to see if we would get a good sunset to shoot I found this area just covered with gulls.  Some you saw yesterday.  I don't even dare tell you how many shots I took as I put it on rapid fire to try to get some good ones.  My wife said she really liked this one, so I'm sharing it with you.  I hope you're having phun with these birds because I certainly had Phun getting up close and personal wiht them.  And OBTW, with all thise birds I didn't get bombed even once.  Amazing!

Slow Shutter

Seems like I've been staying up a lot lately.  This shot was also taken along the shoreline of Antelope Island in The Great Salt Lake probably about 45 minutes after the sun had gone down.  I wanted to use a slow shutter to get the water as soft as possible.  The texture you see in the top of the photo is cloud reflection.  This is an HDR combination of a 15 second exposure, a 30 second exposure and a 60 second exposure.

Phun Phriday! # 64 - Moonlight Silhouette

It's Phun Phriday! again and sometimes you have to do unusual things to get unusual images.  Like staying up way past your bed time.  This one was taken in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah about 40 minutes after midnight with clouds and a bright moon.

Revisit the Back Side of Delicate Arch

Just this past Phun Phriday! I posted a photo of Delicate Arch in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah USA.  Some of the comments referred to concern about falling into the bowl (I call it "the toilet bowl") and they were right to be concerned about that because it is very steep and rather deep.  I have seen several people lose bottles of water down there, but with a little effort and agility, or if you are willing to take another way around, you can retrieve whatever you may drop down there. 

On the other hand, the gulf or cliff on the other side of the arch (pictured above) is not so easily negotiated.  I would say if you lost your water bottle or anything else down this side it is gone.  There is no way a photo can do it justice as one misstep and it is your last. 

Delicate Arch is approximately 52 feet (16 M) high, or about 4 1/2 stories of a commercial office building. If you look very closely you'll see a few small dark dots left of the arch in the photo above.  Those are people.  Based on that I would guestimate the cliff shown above to be about 300 to 600 feet (100 to 200 meters) or 25 to 50 stories, to the bottom.

I took the photo above on my way to the location where I took the photo I posted last Phriday.  The viewpoint for that photo was a good 70 to 100 feet (20 to 30 M) higher as you can see from the angles of this shot and Phriday's shot.  Yes, I was very nervous and consequently very careful up there.  There was no allowance for a slip.

Phun Phriday # 63 - Back Side

It's Phun Phriday! and I'm posting something that was just a little phun for me.  John from "Sinbad and I" reminded me that I had not posted a photo of Delicate Arch from my last Moab trip yet.  What makes this phun is that it is from the back side of Delicate Arch.  If you Google images of Delicate Arch you will get many hundreds of photos of it, but if you look closely you will notice that very very few are from this side.  That is because it is much more difficult to get to a place where you can photograph it from this angle.

In the process I dropped a lens that is going to cost me some to get fixed - that wasn't phun :-(

Strangers # 6

Another in my "Strangers" series and another where I caught more of the environment. I did get his name and where he is from, well at least where he lives now, which is not far from me. His name is John Winiacz and he currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, though he's not originally from there. I figured we'd know a little about him from the activity that I caught him in.  In this photo he is coming down from where he had been clear up on top.  As the country song says "People Are Crazy".

Note:  Over a year ago I introduced you to a neighbor of mine, Joel Nowland, who makes custom guitars.  The guitar that the singer is using if you watch the David Letterman "People Are Crazy" video in the link above, was made by Joel.
