Getting great fireworks shots is really quite simple because the fireworks do most of the work. All you have to do is be at the right place at the right time and be ready.
Being at the right place at the right time is easy because fireworks shows are publicized so well.
Being ready is easy because I'm going to tell you how, and it really is easy.
Step 1: Put your camera in Manual Mode. (As with all these steps, if you don't know how consult your handy dandy owners manual.)
Step 2: Make sure your ISO is set to around 100 (That is pretty standard so unless you've changed it, it's probably already there, but double check to be sure.)
Step 3: Set your focus to manual (turn off autofocus or AF) and focus to infinity setting.
Step 4: Set your f stop (or aperture) to somewhere around f8 to f11.
Step 5: Set your shutter speed to about 4 seconds.
Step 6: Mount your camera on a tripod. (Just a basic inexpensive tripod will work fine for this.)
Step 7: You are going to have to figure out how much you want to zoom in to get the best shots, but I suggest you start at the widest you can and then try different zoom ratios as you need to.
Step 8: Use the first two or three blasts to get a general idea where most of the fireworks will be exploding and aim your camera there.
Step 9: Watch and listen. As you see or hear the next rocket going up quickly press the shutter button then remove your hand from the camera.
Step 10: Watch your LCD screen to see what you got and see if you need to make any adjustments on aim or zoom. (Remember, from when you press the shutter button to when you see an image on the LCD screen will be at least 4 or 5 seconds because that is how long your shutter will be open capturing the image.)
Step 11: Repeat steps 9 and 10 over and over again as many times as you can until the show is over.
Step 12: Go home and pick out the best ones, delete the rest and gloat to you friends what a great job you did.
OBTW: Did you know that many point and shoot and even some very good DSLRs (like mine) have a "fireworks" mode. If yours does try it. . . . That will eliminate steps 1 through 5.
