Ken has a pinstriping business in Salem, Massachusetts and was at the Motorcycle rally in Gloucester advertising his services. He does beautiful work and was very willing to let me take and post his photo.

Building Up Steam

This is the train from yesterday's post only this shot was taken about an hour earlier while she was still in the station building up steam and waiting for departure time.  Looks like the engineer is passing the time with the morning paper.

Union Pacific 844

Do you like old steam trains? You can find out a lot more about this one, including it's current location here.  If you go to that web site and look at the schedule you will see that it left Ogden, Utah USA at 8:00 this morning and traveled to Evanston, Wyoming USA where it was scheduled to arrive at 10:00 AM.  This photo was taken at 8:46 in Weber Canyon as it made it's way along the tracks.  I would estimate the speed at about 55 MPH.

Sunset Sunday - 89

Today's sunset is an HDR image made up of five shots at different exposures.  The sun had actually been below the horizon for about 10 or 15 minutes and the exposures were from 5 to 20 seconds in length giving the water the very soft and smooth look.

Every Sunday is Sunset Sunday. It doesn't matter when you took the photo (and sunrises are okay too) so join us every week. If you have a beautiful sunset/sunrise please share it. Stranger - 14

Lee was part of a large group of bikers that were gathering in Gloucester, Massachusetts for a rally. It was a very peaceful, friendly and happy group. Lee was proud of his riding partner, and took him everywhere. If I remember correctly he said his dog was about 5 years old.

Granddaughter Revisited

Stranger -13

Bob Smith was a very nice guy from northern Vermont who I met in Maine.  He was there on vacation with his wife.  I asked him if I could get a photo for my strangers project and he was nice enough to oblige.  His wife took off pretty fast so  I'm guessing she must have been camera shy.

Sunset Sunday - 87

We're back in Utah for today's Sunset Sunday shot. My goal for this one was as much to get the silky water look as it was to get a sunset. It was very windy and the water was as rough as I can ever remember seeing it on the Great Salt Lake, so this is a 13 second exposure to get that soft look.

The Mechanic

My sweet granddaughter asked me if I'd take her senior portraits and we set up a time yesterday after school to do it. She showed up ready to go and I had been thinking about the location of that old abandoned truck that I posted a year ago so off we went. We took a lot of photos in about three locations and about three hours that seemed like 20 minutes. She did a super job of modeling for me and we had a lot of PHUN getting these.

Stranger - 12

Cindy Spencer is my Stranger # 12. I'm going way to slow on this project, but anyway like # 11 she is an artist, but she works in watercolors.  She even has a web site which you can find here.  I met her while I was photographing and she was painting the Portland Head Lighthouse and as you can see by her photo she was a very pleasant person to meet and photograph.

Beautiful Anywhere

One of the things I loved about New England was the cemeteries.  Seriously . . . In Utah people have been dying for about 165 years.  In New England they've got almost 400 years worth of graves.  I loved seeing all the beautiful little and big cemeteries in every little corner and town.  If I had the money I'd spend a year out there just photographing cemeteries and graves.  Anybody want to contribute to the fund? ;^)   Of course this one not only highlights a super little cemetery, but the fall colors too.

I'm Back!!!!!

As you can see, I'm back. Apparently, Google Blogger had some kind of SNAFU that caused their "spam finder" program to give a false positive reading on this blog, but I finally got them to review it and when they found it spic and span clean they reinstated it . . . without so much as a "gosh, we're sorry". Anyway I'm back. If you weren't aware, or even if you were, I had created a temporary blog and had been posting to it for the past week. With help from another blogger I found out how to transfer all the posts and comments from the temporary blog so you didn't miss a thing. Thank you to my faithful followers, and I will continue to get out to your wonderful blogs soon.

Just A Photo Book

Instead of posting a regular photo on this post I thought I'd tell you how much fun I had putting together my first photo book.  It was a gift from my son and his wife and family.  It was great to go through all my favorite scenic photos that I've taken over the past couple years and whittle them down to my favorite favorites.  It even includes one photo I took over 30 years ago and a poem I wrote in the  eighth grade - If you have a few minutes you can click on the image of the book cover over there on the right side of the blog and take a look through it. Even though this was taken at dusk with somewhat of a sunset in the background I don't call this an official Sunset shot.  After all, we all know that Sunsets are on Sunset Sunday.  

GREAT NEWS:  I actually got a response to one of my cries for help on the Google forum, so maybe, just maybe, I really will get my old blog back.  I'd begun to give up hope.

Stranger # 11

Some of you may remember that I was trying to do the 100 Strangers project on my old blog.  I worked up the courage to ask a few strangers on my New England trip, though not nearly as many as I had hoped to.  This is Dennis and he was painting a picture of an old abandoned mansion not too far from the Portland Head Lighthouse.  As always, I asked him if I could take his photo and post it for my project, and he obliged.

Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse

Once in a while I like to mess around with textures.  This is supposed to look like an old tintype photo.  I created the texture myself using brushes I found on the Internet on a dark brown background and then laying the photo over it.  As with the other photos, you can get a much better view by mouse clicking directly on the photo.

Portland Head Lighthouse

The Portland Head Lighthouse is to lighthouses as Delicate Arch is to natural arches.  It is reported to be the most photographed and painted of all the lighthouses.  Perhaps you can see why.

Lilly Pads

We planned our trip for October because of what we had heard about the New England fall colors.  They are beautiful in the Utah mountains too.  When we got there we were told by the locals that this was the most disappointing year they could remember for fall colors.  I managed to scratch out a few pretty good ones anyway.  More will follow so stay tuned.
