Out of the Past

This is Union Pacific Engine 119, an exact replica of the Union Pacific Engine that participated in the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah in 1869. I took this photo on December 30, 2011.

Yesterday was kind of a milestone day when follower # 400 signed on. Today I'm at 401. Thanks to all of you who enjoy my blog enough to follow it. I am humbled and though I have thought of dropping the blog a couple times, I simply have too many blogger friends to let myself do that. Thanks again!!!!

Sunset Sunday - 97

Click on photo to view enlarged.

I find myself quite fascinated with the ice formations on the Great Salt Lake. Because of the high salt content it is hard for it to freeze and yet it does and when it does, it does it with a wide variety of textures and forms.

Every Sunday is Sunset Sunday. It doesn't matter when you took the photo (and sunrises are okay too) so join us every week. If you have a beautiful sunset/sunrise please share it. Post a link in your comment, (click here to learn how) or just tell us it's there and we'll click on your name to find it.
OBTW, if you do post something for Sunset Sunday it would put a big smile on my face if you added a link to this blog. Thanks!

Stranger - 17

I don't know if you've been to Purgatory, but I have. As a matter of fact we were stopped there, which in this case is along the coast in Rhode Island, when this gentleman started telling us about the unique rock formations and how and when they were formed. After talking to him for a few minutes we found out that he was from around there and now lives in Florida. I asked him if I could take his photo as part of my 100 strangers project and he graciously obliged.

His name is David Mook, and he is a professor of Geology . . . That explains why he new all about Purgatory. Thanks Dr. Mook for the info and the photo.

Splash of Red

Today's image is from the same day as the previous water droplet photo. I liked this one because it had a little more color in it and it's easier to tell that the droplets are actually coming off of the branches from one of our peach trees.

The Original Manure Spreader

Click on photo to view enlarged.
As you can see these don't get much use any more. They have been replaced by politicians.

Another from Monday's snowy evening captured live and textured with my own texture creation.

Thawing

Last night was gray skies and snow, today was blue skies and melting snow. The perfect opportunity to get out the macro lens and see what I could capture inside the droplets.

The Olde Cottage

Click on photo to view enlarged.
As I have mentioned before, I plan to do quite a bit with textures on my photographs starting this year to give them a more artsy look. It was finally snowing in Utah this afternoon and so I went out to try and get some snow shots. I found this very cool looking little house with a light on in the window and captured it. I then added some texture to try to give it a vintage look with some fading and staining. Hope it worked.

Sunset Sunday - 96

Taken on Friday evening. I really love the texture on the ice in the foreground. This one is not HDR or any special processing.

Promontory Windmill

I've really been enjoying finding, creating and applying textures to photos lately. Much of what I've learned is thanks to other photographers and especially Kim Klassen. I will be spending a lot of time and effort and having a lot of phun with textures for a while.

Sunset Sunday - 95

You have seen a couple or three images with these old fence posts before, but I really like this one because of the position of both the sun and the reflection.

Original

This is the original SOOC of the photo that yesterday's post was created from. Interestingly, my wife likes this original better, but my 18 year old granddaughter likes the "antiqued" version on yesterday's post.  I thought it would be the opposite.

Detail of old Union Pacific Railroad Steam Engine 119 which met with Southern Pacific Engine Jupiter on May 10, 1869 at Promontory, Utah, USA to mark the historic joining of railroad tracks which stretched approximately 3000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean on the East to the Pacific Ocean on the West.

Mills Pond

Click on photo to view enlarged.

As I've mentioned recently, 2012 will be a year of effort to make my photography more artful and I will also be having phun with  high speed photography and other interesting processing techniques on the computer.  If you remember and liked my Phun Phriday posts that I used to have, let me know in your comments and maybe I'll bring them back.

This photo was taken at Mills Pond on Cape Cod in Chatham, Massachusetts, USA,  at the spot where I met DeWayne, stranger # 16 that I introduced you too a couple days ago.  I added some texture and a filter to it along with other processing to make it more of a piece of art.

Sunset Sunday - 94

Click on photo to view enlarged.

When you walk through a storm
Keep your chin up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.

Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone.

It's easy really . . . just tell Chad that there's a beautiful Sunset ahead and "You'll never walk alone!"
This one is dedicated to my photo buddy Chad because tomorrow is his birthday.
With thanks and apologies to Rodgers and Hammerstein.

If you've never heard the song or just want to hear it again, click here. This isn't the version I remember and it's not nearly as good, but It'll do.

Stranger - 16

Click on photo to view enlarged.

DeWayne, who I met in Massachusetts when we both stopped to look at the same scenery, lives in San Diego, California, but is from Rhode Island (I think I got that right).  Anyway I told him about my 100 strangers project and he kindly consented to let me take his photo.  As you can see, he appears to be a really nice guy and someone I could become friends with . . . if I lived near San Diego, California.  Oh, he retired from the U.S. Navy, so being an Army guy, I don't know about that friend thing.   ;^)))

Sunset Sunday - 93 HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012

Click on photo to view enlarged.
Instead of a Sunset photo I am posting a Sunrise photo as the sun rises on a new year.   I hope 2012 is the best ever for each of you.
This photo was taken this past week when the temperature was about 20 f (-7 c) and the sun was rising behind me as I was shooting to the west.
