Fiery Reentry

On February 23, 2015 space debris from Stage 3 of the booster rocket that put a Chinese satellite into orbit in December of 2014 fell back to earth. There were very few sightings because it was almost at 11:00 p.m. MST, but it was reported by people from Mexico to Alberta, Canada. Of course there are very few photos of it because no one was expecting it and I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

It was actually much closer than it appears in this photo because I was using a 14mm lens and so it makes things appear a lot further away. In this image It is disappearing to the North over the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, USA. I think it's also kind of cool that you can see trails from parts that were coming off of it and following along. They must have been pretty big parts. The light on the snow is from the moon which was hidden behind the Moulton Barn in Grand Teton National Park.

I posted a different photo from the same sighting a couple weeks ago, but I like this image even better.

Night Sky over the Tetons

Click on photo to view enlarged.

If you know the Tetons you know that there are now towns or anything else that could possibly produce light pollution for many many miles to the North and so I was perplexed by the red sky to the North. I am told that on that particular night the Northern Lights were seen much farther south than normal and so I have to assume that that is what we were seeing there.

I hope to be doing quite a bit of Night shooting in the future and am even attending a seminar by The Master of night photography, Mr. Royce Bair, this coming week. I've got A LOT to learn.
