Contrast

Contrast by Just Used Pixels
Contrast, a photo by Just Used Pixels on Flickr.

I have to admit that I find myself totally captivated by the dry warm desert scene in the foreground against the backdrop of the snow capped mountains. What a contrast.

Phun Phriday # 62 - What a Surprise

Move your mouse pointer over the photo to see the original.
Move it off again to come back to the enhanced (HDR) version.

It's Phun Phriday! kids, and today I'm going to tell you how I had Phun with this photo. Read the words in red above to see how to view the before version too.

I was messing around with this photo in Photoshop to post it yesterday and I wasn't getting the results I wanted. I had seen an image that my photo buddy Chad had done from this same area that I wanted to try for similar results. The problem was that Chad's was an HDR and I only had one original of this image . . . How can you make an HDR from only one image? Since I knew that the secret to HDR is to have at least three images with exposures at least two f stops apart, using Photoshop Bridge I simply saved two additional copies of this image, one adjusted up two stops and one adjusted down two stops . I took all three to my HDR program (Photomatix) and voila. What a surprise. I was just amazed and I had a lot of Phun doing it.

Of course you can see that I also cropped it some to get better composition and added my watermark copyright and a small frame.

What do you think?

As you know by now photography should be Phun and that's why I have my Phun Phriday! posts. Have you done something Phun, weird and/or creative lately? If so, leave a link to it in your comment or just tell us it's there so we can go find it. If not, I'd really love to hear from you anyway.

OBTW, if you do post something for Phun Phriday! it would put a big smile on my face if you added a link to my blog. Thanks!

Excitement

If you could see the excitement in his eyes as he takes home his new treasure that he found at the Nest Depot to upgrade the nest for his sweetheart . . . after all that nursery will need some special attention now.

Shaffer Trail Looking Up

While in Moab two weeks ago I took about 1500 photos, many of which were for HDR like this one, so probably about 500 or so different scenes.  Of the ones I have scrutinized so far this is definitely one of my favorites. I posted a very similar one on Flickr last night, but I like this one even better.

Nap Time

A sure sign of Spring. Too bad it was in Oregon last week because it hasn't got warm enough for this is my part of Utah yet.

I can't include this as one of my "Strangers" shots because I didn't want to wake her up to get her name.

Sunset Sunday - 61

First of all I want to wish you a very happy Easter as we celebrate the rising of The Son on this Sunset Sunday.

Ironic really.  We got out of the truck and headed South on foot to get to a good vantage point for the sunset.  By the time I was through I had walked a big circle, up and down rocky hills for about 1/2 mile to end up about 100 feet or so West of the truck to take this sunset.  I'm sure the exercise was good for me though.  This was taken in what is called the "Windows" section of Arches National Park.

Do you have a beautiful sunset/sunrise to share? We'd love to see it. Post a link  in your comment, (click here to learn how) or just tell us it's there and we'll click on your name to find it.

OBTW, if you do post something for Sunset Sunday it would put a big smile on my face if you added a link to my blog. Thanks!

.The answer to the question on Phun Phriday! is 23.  If you click on the photo to embiggen it you can count 22 heads and then there's me.  It is possible, as Sandra said, that there were a few more behind me or off to the right, but only a few if any.

Strangers # 5

Just 95 to go.  Doesn't look like I'll get it done in one year like I hoped, but I am getting a little better at it.

I decided to do some in their environment instead of all close up, though I hope to do most of them more close up like the previous four.

This is Cara sitting in the train station waiting for the bus in Albany, Oregon.

Phun Phriday! # 61 - Phun in the Morning

It's Phun Phriday again and time to talk about more Phun in Moab, Utah area.

No one who dares call themselves a photographer could possibly go to Moab, Utah and not get up very early one morning to drive the 32 miles or so and then hike in about 1/4 mile to get up to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park to catch the sunrise.  For our part we were there about 6:20 to be ready.  The Arch faces almost due East and as you can see by the photo of the front of the arch below, immediately under the arch is a very large wall that reflects the morning sun up onto the underside creating the beautiful glow that you see on the photo above..

We were lucky because we got there on a morning when there weren't as many visitors as there are on many days, but I had to share the photo below to show you what it looks like behind the arch as the sun rises.

Since it is Phun Phriday, just phor phun when you leave your comment tell me how many were there for the sunrise that morning?  I'll post the correct answer on Sunset Sunday.

As you know by now photography should be Phun and that's why I have my Phun Phriday! posts. Have you done something Phun, weird and/or creative lately?  If so, leave a link to it in your comment or just tell us it's there so we can go find it.  If not, I'd really love to hear from you anyway.

Spring in Corvallis

When I left for Moab, where it is a desert, Spring had not quite sprung in Northern Utah yet.  Then I was off to Oregon, where it is very green and Spring is in full swing.  So, as I was touring Corvallis I saw these beautiful tulips and this old Episcopal Church which had been moved to this location and converted to the Corvallis Arts Center.

Tomorrow's Phun Phriday! photos will highlight one of my favorite places in the Moab area.

Intro to Arches National Park

In Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah there is a lot of beauty besides just the arches.  This is one is not too deep into the park if I remember correctly.

Strangers # 4

Yes I'm back from my trips.  You might expect that I would start out with one of the many many photos I took in Arches National Park or Canyonlands National Park or something in that area.  The problem is that I had camera trouble and so none turned out . . .  Just kidding, it is still April you know.  I want to take a little time and do a little work to make those the best I can, so you may have to wait a few days.

A few months ago I started my Strangers project (Click here to see all the "Strangers" posts and an explanation of the project).  While I was in Corvallis, Oregon - home of the Oregon State Beavers - on Monday I met this lady who was taking some photos for a Photography class that she is taking.  So I took her photo for you.  Her name is Peggy, and though she has lived in Oregon for the past many years she is from New Mexico.  As you can tell by her expression, she is a happy and very nice lady.

Sunset Sunday - 60

Posts for the next couple of weeks will be sporadic at best.  I am leaving this afternoon to spend a few days in the area of Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park and then immediately off to visit my son and his family for a few days up in Oregon.  Then I'll probably need a couple more weeks to recover  ;^)  I should have Internet access and will try to check in when time permits, and maybe make a post or two as well as see what you've been up to.

Do you have a beautiful sunset/sunrise to share? We'd love to see it. Post a link  in your comment, (click here to learn how) or just tell us it's there and we'll click on your name to find it.

Don't Fence Me In

Why is it that I can't drive by one of these old corrals without stopping to take some photos?  I think it's because I'm fascinated by the fact that even in places of grandiose beauty work still had to be done.  I'm afraid if I was one of the cowboys I'd have been way too distracted by the surroundings to get anything done.

This photo was taken just outside Moab, Utah, USA on the road to the "Island in the Sky" portion of Canyonlands National Park on October 11, 2010.  Chad and I are headed there again next week to find new and even more beautiful photos to take.

Phun Phriday # 60 - Phabulous

Besides being Phun Phriday! today is also April 1st or April Fools Day. My new blog name and design is NOT an April Fools joke. I like it and expect that the name will probably last as long as I keep posting to this blog though the design may change some day.

It's Phun Phriday, and as I was visiting our nearby Air Force Museum on Wednesday I came across this.  How could I resist?  What could be better on a Photography blog's Phun Phriday than a Phabulous Phantoms Phorever Photo reconnaissance jet?  I just hope I haven't used up all my Ps phor this year.  Oh, and as an extra bonus it kind of ties in to my new blog color scheme.

As you know by now photography should be Phun and that's why I have my Phun Phriday! posts. Have you done something Phun, weird and/or creative lately?  If so, leave a link to it in your comment or just tell us it's there so we can go find it.  If not, I'd really love to hear from you anyway.
